Horizon Theater Stages the World Premiere of New South Play Festival Night Blooms

One historic night in 1965, two Selma, Alabama families are confronted with conflicts and find their differences are not necessarily black and white.

On the day of this country’s most famous civil rights march, the Stafford household laughs, cries, celebrates the annual bloom of a flower that no one really cares about and reacts when an unexpected freedom fighter appears on their doorstep. Night Blooms is a moving story of an ordinarily dysfunctional family living in the midst of extraordinary change.

The Stafford family is white with a black housekeeper named Geneva Willis. Between the Staffords and the Willis’, this day is perpetually the longest day of 1965. One family watches a plant while awaiting its bloom while another waits to see her son off to march alongside the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In her own kindness, Geneva Willis agrees to assist the Staffords in preparing for a ‘bloom’ party and then plans to quickly leave to go and support the ‘movement’.

In a dysfunctional turn of events of changing plans, name calling, and knee-slapping one-liners Night Blooms is truth and honesty in its rawest form. Night Blooms is a product of the New South Play Festival and showing at Horizon Theater. This World Premiere production is sponsored by the Macy’s Foundation.

Performances of Night Blooms run from Sept 24th through Oct 24th.
